Human Rights Opportunities in India

The exploitation of immigrant and child labor, the caste system, and a lack of education and healthcare are just a few of the human rights issues that deeply affect India today. Interns, volunteers, and donors work with FSD to provide support for human rights programs that:

  • Enhance the legal knowledge base of the people in Udaipur about constitutional rights, land- and forest-related legal provisions, and welfare schemes.

  • Monitor communities and conduct meetings to raise awareness and organize grassroots rights movements for the betterment of child rights.
  • Legitimize migrant laborers and their plight by supporting registration, communication services, preparation, and tracking. Other services include counseling, legal and sex education, and network building.
  • Work with both formal and informal institutions to empower villagers to exercise their rights relating to: Man Sarovar Dam displacement, mining that causes water pollution and displacement, and forest based livelihoods threatened by government policies.
  • Conduct research on policy-related work for the protection of unorganized, migrant laborers' rights, and assess efficacy of current initiatives.
  • Empower village-level institutions by building awareness about methods to pressure government through grassroots action. Outreach campaigns involve building village-level groups; staging rallies, seminars, and meetings; and conducting training programs.
