Project Title: Dung Paper and Chili Peppers
FSD Partner: Mwaluganjie Elephant Sanctuary
Summary: While interning with Mwaluganjie Evan Surley worked to raise revenue and awareness of the sanctuary and reduce the conflict between humans and elephants. In order to raise awareness Evan helped on a project that uses elephant dung to make paper. To enhance the project Evan organized a club of primary school students to decorate the notebook covers. In order to address the issue of stopping elephant crop raids a project was implemented grpwing using chili peppers. The chili peppers are used to ward of the elephants.
Project Title: Power to the Forest
FSD Partner: KEEP
Summary: Working with partner organization KEEP intern James Perakis worked on issues revolving around the deforestation of the Kakamega Rain Forest, due to agriculture expansion, cattle grazing, fuel wood collection and logging. In address the issue of fuel wood collection a project was created to reduce the demand by developing a fuel briquette initiative. Fuel briquettes are made from everyday commercial and agricultural residues and can be used as a replacement for traditional sources of energy.
Project Title: Making a Difference with Cow Dung
FSD Partner: Community Action for Rural Development (CARD)
Summary: In addressing the issue of deforestation of the Kakamega Rain Forest from fuel wood collection Lisa Curtis, working with CARD, helped to construct a Biogas program. Biogas is a naturally produced from decaying organic matter and is then harnessed to use for cooking and lighting.
