Environmental Initiatives in Bolivia
Project Title: Treating Waste Water to Improve Water Quality of Rio Raocha.
FSD Partner: La Cooperative de Agua Potable y Alcantarillado Ltda. Quintanilla
Summary: Working with La Cooperative de Agua intern Karen Swtland worked to address the challenge to increase quality of the water being discharged to the Rio Raocha; through utilizing the Imhoff tank to treat waste water. Through collaboration with another FSD led an educational workshop for the users of the wastewater system to explain proper use of the system; increased awareness of the need for the recuperation of the Imhoff tank; met with and introduced to the Cooperative an environmental engineering consultant who will hopefully be a large asset towards the recuperation of the Imhoff tank.
Project Title: Sustianable Gardening for Women’s Refuge.
FSD Partner: Fundación Pro Habitat
Summary: Amy Scott, a Global Studies undergrad from Azusa Pacific, worked with Fundación Pro Habitat in Cochabamba, Bolivia. She won an FSD grant to implement a sustainable gardening program in southern Cochabamba at a women’s refuge. The refuge was founded to support women who have experienced intra-familial violence. The refuge houses dozens of women, allowing them to raise their children in a supportive community of people committed to opposing violence and living cooperatively.
