Human Rights Opportunities in Uganda
Respect for human rights in Uganda has been advanced significantly since the mid-1980s. There are, however, numerous areas that continue to attract concern. Since 1986, Uganda has experienced several internal conflicts, with the northern districts of Kitgum and Gulu and the western district of Karamoja being the most prolonged and severe.

Conflict in the northern parts of the country continues to generate reports of abuses by both the rebel Lord's Resistance Army and the Ugandan Army. The LRA has abducted over 25,000 children to serve as soldiers and sex slaves, while upwards of 1.6 million people have been displaced due to the conflict.

Interns, volunteers, and donors work with FSD and its partner organizations in Jinja and Masaka to:
- Lobby for the protection of children's rights and develop strategies with local institutions to implement and enforce laws and policies.
- Research and educate the public about current literature on child abuse, children's rights, neglect, interventions, and support systems.
- Represent the needs of marginalized groups in community development projects revolving around transportation, infrastructure, and social welfare.
- Provide rights-related workshops to local communities and support the establishment of a collective voice to protect vulnerable groups from exploitation.
- Facilitate social welfare programs that include the rehabilitation and reunification of youth and their families.
- Provide life skills and vocational training, along with credit and savings opportunities for marginalized youth.
- Mobilize grassroots communities to advocate for the protection of children from physical, sexual, and labor abuse.
