Organization Overview

Puesto de Salud Las Salinas (Las Salinas Health Center) is dedicated to providing health care and necessary medications to the population in and around Las Salinas free of cost. Founded in 2007, the health center is a public institution within the network of the Ministry of Health (MINSA) in Nicaragua. The staff of the center provides healthcare to an estimated population of 5,000 residents through patient visits to the clinic and staff visits to the field.

Programs

Programs include: identification and treatment of chronic and communicable diseases, prenatal and postnatal care, infant care, preventative public health talks and AIDS education in the community. Various projects inspire partnership with outside organizations, while others produce community-driven approaches. The program, Plan Parto or “Plan Birth,” for example, utilizes community-driven support groups to provide multi-stage care for pregnant women. (The groups were initially mobilized by staff members at Puesto de Salud Las Salinas, with the assistance of an FSD intern, and continue to be supported by clinic staff.) With regard to diagnosis and treatment at the center, the most common health problems identified are malnutrition, respiratory disease, parasites, diarrhea, kidney stones, urinary tract infections, blood pressure problems and tuberculosis. Prevention comes with field visits to impart talks on relevant health topics, such as hygiene, nutrition and oral care, in addition to providing relevant information about common preventable diseases.
