About FSD
Mission and Initiatives
Our Mission
FSD supports the efforts of grassroots development organizations in the developing world that are working to better their communities, environments, and the economic opportunities around them. We believe development begins with the community and is only sustainable if it comes from and is supported by the members of these communities. Also, through our programs, we aim to raise international awareness of the economic challenges in developing countries and support cross-cultural communities in finding more effective solutions to development issues.
FSD Initiatives
Internship Programs
FSD provides college students, graduates, and professionals with the opportunity to gain practical hands-on experience through internship programs eight weeks and longer with organizations in Latin America, Africa, and Asia, as part of an integrated program that includes a family homestay, orientation and debriefing sessions, grant making, and program support. FSD offers summer and year-round internships in nine countries. Please check out our internship, ProCorps, and GradCorps pages for more information.
Short Term Programs
FSD offers Enrichment Trips--Adventure Travel for the Service-minded, Alternative Spring Breaks, Summer service trips, Study tours, and year round short term volunteer programs. These short term programs offer visitors insights into the countries, including their culture and people, as well as learning firsthand about the various challenges they face in pursuing sustainable development. Short term programs are available for one week and longer.
Grant Programs
We currently have four grant programs: Mini Grants, Summer Grants, Special Projects, and Sponsored Projects. Please see our donate page for specific information about each program. With your help, we can provide additional financial assistance to deserving organizations and projects throughout the developing world. Please help FSD's efforts by making a tax-deductible donation. You can donate online from our donate page.
Events
FSD hosts monthly educational events, which are open to the public. Each month we choose a different topic in development and bring together a panel of individuals from the Bay area that are working in or researching this area. We also hold two benefits each year and host a team for the Bay to Breakers race in May. We also cosponsor numerous events. Please see our events page for more information.
